Kitty Felde: One week from tonight, Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party's nomination for President. He'll do it not inside a cramped convention hall, but in front of 76,000 people at Invesco Field, home of the NFL's Denver Broncos. It won't be the first time the Democrats' nominee has finished the convention with a speech in a football stadium. KPCC's Special Correspondent Kitty Felde turns back the clock nearly a half-century when another young, dynamic Democratic candidate addressed a crowd in the L.A. Coliseum.

Water Agency Completes Tunnel for Inland Water Project
Steven Cuevas: It was a scene right out of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" Wednesday near the San Bernardino Mountains. An 800-ton boring machine burst from beneath the earth's crust. KPCC's Steven Cuevas says it wasn't science fiction. It was another step in one of the longest-running water projects in Southern California history.

Frank Stoltze: Federal authorities yesterday said they arrested more than 50 Southern California men for sharing child pornography over the Internet. The arrests resulted from an eight-month investigation that targeted people who use anonymous peer-to-peer networks to swap illegal images of children. KPCC's Frank Stoltze has more.

Frank Stoltze: Doctors may not use their religious beliefs as justification for refusing to treat gays and lesbians, the California Supreme Court yesterday. The decision arose from a case involving a lesbian who wanted to become pregnant through artificial insemination. KPCC's Frank Stoltze has more.

Food Waste, Lawn Trimmings Can Help Garden and Planet
Ilsa Setziol: Every year Californians throw away almost six million tons of food. They also put nearly two million tons of leaves and grass into landfills. That's a huge waste, especially since a lot of that could become what gardeners call "black gold." In part two of her series on green gardening, Ilsa Setziol explains why composting is good for your garden, and good for the planet.

Jury Selection to Begin in U.S. Marine Murder Trial
Steven Cuevas: Jury selection is scheduled to start Tuesday in the Riverside trial of a former Marine sergeant charged in the deaths of four Iraqi detainees during combat. KPCC's Steven Cuevas reports it's the first time the federal government has prosecuted an ex-soldier for an alleged crime committed while in uniform.

"Peanuts" Comic Strips - Lost in the Inland Empire?
Steven Cuevas: Eight years after the death of cartoonist Schulz, his classic "Peanuts" strips still run daily in hundreds of newspapers. An exhibit of Schulz's work is now open at Riverside Metrololitan Museum. As KPCC's Steven Cuevas found out, some of the original artwork for those strips is missing, perhaps lost in the Inland Empire.

Home Gardens, Part 1
Ilsa Setziol: More and more people are shopping at farmers markets, looking for food that's fresher and eco-friendlier. Others have gone a step further: growing their own food. But is home gardening really good for the Earth? In the first of two reports, Ilsa Setziol says, it depends on how you go about it, especially when it comes to water.
