Searching for Solutions in Trinidad
<p>There have been over twenty homicides this year in the Trinidad neighborhood of DC. Victims include Alonzo Robinson, a 13-year old who was visiting the District from Alabama. In response, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier says strategic checkpoints in the area will continue until a federal court rules otherwise. But as police search for solutions, a community is looking to itself for answers. A Life Cut Short at 13
<p>Community activists and police in DC have been searching for ways to end the violence in the Trinidad neighborhood this year. Trinidad Dance
<p>The City Dance Ensemble has been running workshops for kids in the Trinidad Recreation Center since April. Stephanie Kaye was there this week as the kids were rehearsing for an end-of-session performance and spoke with Program Manager Kelli Thompson. Youth Voices: Fear, Hype and the Media
<p>Many people believe that what's heard on the radio, seen on the television and read in the newspaper presents an overly grim view of life - portraying a threat looming on every front and using hype giving the impression that world is coming to an end. From dire warnings about the economy and global warming to breathless coverage of terrorism, snipers and bird flu. Youth Voices reporter Charles Pulliam-Moore has been troubled by what HE senses is too much hype in the coverage. Gonzo The Great
<p>Before his death in 1990, Jim Henson and his team created a cast of memorable Muppet characters. You can see many of them at the 'Jim Henson's Fantastic World' exhibit at the Smithsonian International Gallery this summer. Last week we presented an overview of the show. This week - it's an interview with none other than Gonzo The Great. Gonzo creator, Dave Goelz has been known by many names. The one-time industrial designer worked for Hewlett-Packard, but is most famous as Gonzo. In 1973, Goelz joined the Henson crew - despite lacking any serious background in theatre or puppetry. Speaking with Andrew Hiller, Dave Goelz says it's a fairly anonymous life as a muppeteer - until folks see those characters and hear those voices.</p><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/WAMU885MetroConnection/~4/352560654" height="1" width="1"/>


Nature with Mark Garland: Glover-Archibald Park
<p>Naturalist Mark Garland often brings us along on guided-tours of the natural areas around the DC region. Today we visit Glover-Archibald Park in the District. It's an expanse of urban green space that's well-loved by people in the surrounding community but not as well-known outside the neighborhood. It's maintained by the National Park Service, boasts 4 1/2 miles of trails and runs from the Potomac River in Georgetown all the way up to Van Ness Street in Northwest DC.
