Stop-Loss, Bell Labs, Burke (Studio 360: Friday, 04 July 2008)
Filmmaker Kimberly Peirce talks about taking inspiration from soldiers’ videos, shot in Iraq and posted to YouTube. Her movie “Stop-Loss” is just out on DVD. We’ll also hear about the legendary scientific lab in New Jersey that invented nearly everything. Plus, soul singer Solomon Burke masters country music.<div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=8KIM1J"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=8KIM1J" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=ywouMJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=ywouMJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=FyMWXJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=FyMWXJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/wnyc_home/~4/327129469" height="1" width="1"/>

Changes (The No Show: Saturday, 05 July 2008)
Steve ruminates on life’s many changes, each of which he despises and especially the final change of death. The Broken News expands upon that theme. Paul Krassner joins Steve to reflect on the life of Paul’s friend, George Carlin. And The Musical Necropolis welcomes a new resident: Ira B. Tucker of the Dixie Hummingbirds. The music will leave you breathless.<div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=kNCA9J"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=kNCA9J" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=ZdmIRJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=ZdmIRJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=z1tdXJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=z1tdXJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/wnyc_home/~4/327129473" height="1" width="1"/>

Slavic Rocker Gets Serious (New Sounds: Saturday, 05 July 2008)
Goran Bregovic, guitarist and composer, was a rock hero in the former Yugoslavia with his band Bijelo Dugme (White Button.) When he tired of that, he moved on to film scores, making incredible music to accompany the films of Emir Kusturica (Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, Undreground.) Bregovic has written for Iggy Pop, Ofra Haza, and Cesaria Evora, to name a few. His compositions marry the sounds of a gypsy brass band with traditional Bulgarian polyphonies, those of an electric guitar and traditional percussion with an unmistakable rock accent. A rowdy brass band, bagpipes, a string ensemble, a tuxedo-clad all-male choir from Belgrade, and traditional Bulgarian and gypsy singers make up his dynamic Orchestra for Weddings and Funerals. Tonight, on this edition of New Sounds, John Schaefer talks with Goran in the studio and samples some of his music.<div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=4wzIzJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=4wzIzJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=4Bi8SJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=4Bi8SJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=CCXIPJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=CCXIPJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/wnyc_home/~4/327129474" height="1" width="1"/>

Avocet (Spinning On Air: Sunday, 06 July 2008)
Amplified dangling forks and spoons provide accompaniment to the songs of Avocet. Avocet is Meara O’Reilly, who has visited Spinning On Air before with the band Feathers. This time she brings her voice, guitar, and the extraordinary amplified silverware instrument she created, to the WNYC Studio for performances with her friends Eban Portnoy and Sarah Magenheimer of the band Flying. An avocet is a kind of water bird, and avian themes abound in Meara’s songs. She talks about this, her instruments, and more, with host David Garland. <br /><br /> <a class="more" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spinningonair/sets/72157605936929636/show/" target="_blank">View photos from the session</a><br /> <br /> Avocet at <a class="more" href="http://www.myspace.com/mearabai" target="_blank">MySpace</a><br /> <br /> <a class="more" href="http://www.wnyc.org/shows/spinning/episodes/2006/06/04" target="_blank">Feathers on Spinning On Air</a><br /><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=2gL4lJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=2gL4lJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=oTHqCJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=oTHqCJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?a=PYyTsJ"><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~f/wnyc_home?i=PYyTsJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.wnyc.org/~r/wnyc_home/~4/327129475" height="1" width="1"/>
