A Seattle Streetcar network. We used to have one connecting neighborhoods throughout the city. Some city leaders are now hoping to re-create it. This week, the city council is holding community meetings on a plan to expand the South Lake Union route with four additional lines. It will cost 600 million dollars. But has the South Lake Union Streetcar been successful? Are people riding it? Are you? Are streetcars a good answer to our transportation woes?

Do It Yourself
DIY stands for Do It Yourself. It's a movement, an ethic, a commitment to putting on rock shows and putting out your friend's album. It means you make your own clothes, fix your own bike, scavenge your own food or fix up your house yourself. Actually, it's something different depending on who you ask. That's kind of the point. DIY means you create the products and services you need, instead of paying someone else to do it. There's a thriving DIY community in our region. We'll talk with some of those involved. Is this just for anarchists and teenagers? What's your DIY project?

Reading from a Guantanamo Diary
A conversation on the week's news in Canada from our Canadian correspondent, Vaughn Palmer, political correspondent for the Vancouver Sun. In 2006 Mahvish Rukhsana Khan did a Google search. It started a chain of events that led her to be an interpreter for Afghan detainees at the Guantanamo Detention Center. She was one of the few people allowed inside Guantanamo, and listened to stories from the men labeled "enemy combatants." She shares what they told her about their capture, families, despair and hope.

The True Patriot: the opportunity and responsibility of citizenship
How do you define patriotism in America in 2008? Eric Liu and Nick Hanauer wrote a little red book called The True Patriot. They want to remind people of their responsibilities as American citizens. Have liberals run away from the concept of patriotism? Has the concept of patriotism been turned into a political cudgel that squelches open discussion? Can the left and right agree on what patriotism means? Are you a patriot? Does the word patriot make you uncomfortable? Call 206–543–5869 or email weekday@kuow.org.
