Empty Hallways, Third-Party Games Mark E3 2008
The E3 Media & Business Summit was certainly quieter and more manageable compared to years past, but don't let the toned-down scene fool you. At E3, Insiders Thrive as Booth Babes Go Extinct
<img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2364_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> LOS ANGELES -- The videogame industry struts its stuff each year at E3, but the party is decidedly more intimate than it used to be. </p> <p> Formerly known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the annual conference now dubbed the <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">E3 Media & Business Summit</a> has evolved from a public event that drew tens of thousands of gamers to an invitation-only dog-and-pony show for videogame journalists and industry insiders. Unlike the old days, this year's E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center is short on booth babes and swag. </p> <p> Still, heavy hitters like <a href="http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/multimedia/2008/07/gallery_xbox360">Microsoft</a>, <a href="http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/multimedia/2008/07/gallery_e3_nintendo">Nintendo</a> and <a href="http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/multimedia/2008/07/gallery_e3_sony">Sony</a> pulled out all the stops as they tried to pique journalists' interests. Here's a peek behind the scenes at the event, which ends Thursday. </p> <p> <strong>Left:</strong> Gunnar Johannson of Swedish gamemaker <a href="http://www.grin.se/">Grin</a> takes a call Wednesday from his mother in Sweden. She had not heard from him in a couple of days and wanted to make sure he was OK. Not to worry -- he has his <cite>Bionic Commando</cite> promotional arm to protect him. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I1818_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p>Ryan Treit, a reporter for Xbox.com from Seattle, is the lone rider (besides the photographer) on Shuttle Bus No. 3 late Tuesday afternoon. The shuttle carries E3 attendees from the Los Angeles Convention Center to the hotels that house them. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2391_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> Tracey Thompson, PR consultant for Bethesda Software, is watched over Wednesday by a member of the Brotherhood of Steel from <cite>Fallout 3</cite>. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2035_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> The Neversoft Band plays Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" Tuesday night as Activision shows <cite><a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/screens-guitar.html">Guitar Hero World Tour</a></cite> to the world for the first time in a former Los Angeles church. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2291_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> Louis Bedigian, freelance journalist, left, and Ryan Geddes, associate editor of IGN Xbox, type away Wednesday outside Nintendo's media booth. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2307_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> John Drake demonstrates <cite>Rock Band 2</cite> on MTV Games' backroom stage Wednesday. The booth, fully stocked with aftermarket toys like an Alesis electronic drum kit, was the music gamer's ultimate dream venue. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2335_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> Nyko appears to be the only company at E3 that still hires booth babes. Casey Dee, left, and Bernard Hoang show off their musical talents Wednesday morning as Michelle Ballee works the bar in the background. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2377_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> The registration line at the Los Angeles Convention Center is a shadow of its former self Wednesday. Unlike in years gone by, it was a breeze to pick up press credentials every day in 2008. </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_day_3/7G7I2249_t.jpg'></img>: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com<p> Red velvet curtains, Christmas-style lights and blue mood lighting set the tone in the Nintendo press room. </p><br style="clear: both;"/> <img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=ba972e4ac6dfb65331a245856e7df3ad" height="1" width="1"/> <img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=ba972e4ac6dfb65331a245856e7df3ad" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/> <p><a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/wired/culture/joystick?a=QK8Bv2"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/wired/culture/joystick?i=QK8Bv2" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=QfRloJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=QfRloJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=xB2hlj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=xB2hlj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=4DrO3j"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=4DrO3j" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=QnlJ3J"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=QnlJ3J" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=S8VOYJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=S8VOYJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=NFNMOj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=NFNMOj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=Wlypgj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=Wlypgj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=7CgRTJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=7CgRTJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/wired/culture/joystick/~4/337593492" height="1" width="1"/><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/wired/gaming/gamingreviews/~4/337593683" height="1" width="1"/>

<img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_sony/sony_e3_0066_t.jpg'></img>: <p> LOS ANGELES -- With its PlayStation 3 still third in the minds of gamers, Sony offered few new game announcements to excite the crowd at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit. </p> <p> At its press briefing Tuesday, Sony mostly talked up the projects that it currently has in development. The create-your-own-action game <cite>LittleBigPlanet</cite> made an appearance, as did highly anticipated first-person shooter <cite>Resistance 2</cite> and the company's perpetually delayed virtual world, <cite>Home.</cite> </p> <p> Sony only announced one previously unheard-of PlayStation 3 title, a 256-player online shooter called <cite>MAG: Massive Action Game</cite>. Otherwise, the company's E3 conference simply recapped the planned holiday lineup. </p> <p> <strong>Left:</strong> </p> <p> Sony Computer Entertainment America President Jack Tretton works the stage alone, the first time in recent memory that a Sony E3 press conference has been staged without a Japanese executive talking up at least part of the show. </p> <p> <em>Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com</em> </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_sony/sony_e3_0072_t.jpg'></img>: <p> The company's big holiday title, <cite>Resistance 2,</cite> wows the crowd with a real-time demonstration of a firefight against an absurdly, grotesquely large alien creature. </p> <p> <em>Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com</em> </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_sony/sony_e3_0098_t.jpg'></img>: <p> Tretton dresses up what is typically the driest part of an E3 press conference -- charts and graphs detailing the company's recent sales numbers -- by presenting the data as an interactive level created in Sony's upcoming creative game <cite>LittleBigPlanet.</cite> </p> <p> <em>Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com</em> </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_sony/sony_e3_0106_t.jpg'></img>: <p> <cite>Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty</cite> is one of Sony's few new game announcements at E3. Gallery: Nintendo Keeps Casual, Ignores Hard-Core at E3
<img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_nintendo/nintendo_press_0233_t.jpg'></img>: <p> LOS ANGELES -- Nintendo loves casual gamers like Mario loves mushrooms. </p> <p> At a press conference kicking off day two of the E3 Media and Business Summit, the maker of Wii and Nintendo DS said Tuesday that while imitators copy its winning strategy, the company will continue to aggressively pursue nontraditional gamer markets. </p> <p> Nintendo introduced a new line of products aimed at a wider audience, like a new entry in multiplayer community game series <cite>Animal Crossing</cite>, a sequel to the hit <cite>Wii Sports</cite> and a music game that, unlike <cite>Rock Band</cite>, doesn't give you a "game over" if you play the wrong note. </p> <p> But if you're a hard-core gamer who wants a new <cite>Mario</cite> or <cite>Legend of Zelda</cite>, Nintendo had nothing for you. </p> <p> <strong>Left:</strong> </p> <p> E3 might have been scaled back, but Nintendo's press conferences still bring out the crazy fans, like this Destructoid.com writer in a robot mask. </p> <p> <em>Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com</em> </p> <img src='http://www.wired.com/images/slideshow/2008/07/gallery_e3_nintendo/nintendo_press_0276_t.jpg'></img>: <p> Olympic gold medalist Shaun White kicks off Nintendo's press conference Tuesday. Xbox Live Updates , <cite>Final Fantasy XIII</cite> Shocker at E3 2008
At Microsoft's pre-E3 press briefing this morning, Square Enix announced that <cite>Final Fantasy XIII</cite> will be available on the Xbox 360 next year. A major shocker, as the <cite>Final Fantasy</cite> series up until now has been exclusive to Sony. Also announced was <cite>Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5</cite> and a new interface for Xbox Live.<br style="clear: both;"/> <img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=b185c69eb87923d9c6034e88ceb91589" height="1" width="1"/> <img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=b185c69eb87923d9c6034e88ceb91589" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/> <p><a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/wired/culture/joystick?a=MqTI4e"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/wired/culture/joystick?i=MqTI4e" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=6WnIEJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=6WnIEJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=OXRRDj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=OXRRDj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=780oTj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=780oTj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?a=dzZoaJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/culture/joystick?i=dzZoaJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=ZQwodJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=ZQwodJ" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=SyggMj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=SyggMj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=JBdtwj"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=JBdtwj" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?a=AMwDtJ"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/wired/gaming/gamingreviews?i=AMwDtJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/wired/culture/joystick/~4/336257811" height="1" width="1"/><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/wired/gaming/gamingreviews/~4/336257812" height="1" width="1"/>
